Nigerian fashion designer Prudent Gabriel Okopi has revealed that she contacted her immediate elder sister to seek her reassurance before proceeding with her wedding because she felt uncomfortable about getting married before her older sibling. Prudent, who is married to gospel singer Peterson Okopi, explained that she was concerned about how her sister would feel about the situation. Before their wedding date was finalised, she called her sister to ask whether she was comfortable with her getting married first.
The fashion designer shared the experience while speaking at the Next Level Prayers Singles Connect and Prayer Conference hosted by Pastor Bolaji Idowu at Harvesters Globe in Lagos on October 18, 2026. According to Prudent, she was even willing to postpone the wedding until the following year if her sister was uncomfortable with the arrangement.
Prudent Gabriel Asked Her Elder Sister for Reassurance
Recounting the conversation, Prudent explained that she did not want to proceed with her marriage without first addressing her concerns about her sister’s feelings. “I got married before my immediate elder sister. Before my husband fixed the date, before we fixed the date for our wedding, I called my sister, because I was feeling bad about it,” she said.
She recalled asking her sister directly: “Are you okay that I’m getting married before you?” According to Prudent, her sister responded positively and reassured her that the marriage would be a blessing to her rather than something she should feel guilty about. “She said, ‘Prudence, your marriage is going to be a blessing to me. Go ahead,’” she recounted. Her sister’s response helped address the concern, but Prudent said she still wanted to be certain that she was genuinely comfortable with the decision.
She Offered to Postpone Her Wedding Until the Following Year
Prudent disclosed that she was prepared to delay the wedding if that would make her elder sister more comfortable. She explained that neither she nor her husband was in a hurry to get married, meaning they could have waited until the following year if necessary. “Are you sure? I don’t mind, though. I’m not rushing. My husband is not rushing. We can move it to next year. Is your guy ready?” she recalled asking her sister.
The designer explained that she understood her sister’s personality and knew she preferred to take her time before making a lifelong commitment. She also wanted to know whether her sister’s partner was ready for marriage, recognising that the timing of the two relationships was different. Prudent said her sister understood that she and her husband were ready to take the next step, while her own partner was not yet ready at the time.
Emotional Moment With Her Sister on Her Wedding Day
Prudent also recalled an emotional moment with her elder sister on her wedding day. She said she embraced her sister and expressed hope that she would also get married the following year. Although her sister had encouraged her to proceed, Prudent admitted that she still felt bad about marrying first.
“The whole idea of your sister getting married before you, I know it’s not easy like that, but she just understood that my husband and I were ready,” she explained, adding that she believed this made the situation a little easier for her sister. Her account highlighted the emotional considerations that can arise when younger siblings reach major life milestones before their older siblings.
Prudent Gabriel’s Marriage to Peterson Okopi
Prudent Gabriel is a fashion designer and entrepreneur who is married to gospel singer Peterson Okopi. The couple celebrated their marriage in 2024, holding their civil wedding in September, followed by traditional and white wedding ceremonies in October.
Prudent’s recent account offers a personal glimpse into the family considerations that surrounded her own journey to marriage. Her decision to speak with her elder sister before finalising the wedding date reflects her desire to protect their relationship while moving forward with a major decision in her life.
Should a Younger Sister Feel Bad About Marrying First?
Prudent Gabriel’s experience has brought attention to a question that arises in some families: should a younger sibling feel guilty about getting married before an older sibling? Her story shows how family expectations and concern for a loved one’s feelings can influence decisions surrounding marriage. At the same time, siblings may be at different stages of life, and their relationships may progress at different speeds. One person may be ready for marriage while another is still deciding what they want or waiting for the right circumstances.
Prudent’s willingness to discuss the issue openly with her sister allowed them to address the concern before the wedding. Her experience also highlights the importance of mutual understanding and reassurance when family milestones do not happen in the order people expect.
What do you think? Should a younger sister feel bad about getting married before her elder sister, or should marriage decisions depend on when each person is ready?
