“I Was Trusting God for a Child and Healing”: Sunmisola Agbebi Reveals the Pain Behind Her Worship Song

Nigerian gospel music minister Sunmisola Agbebi has opened up about the painful personal experience that inspired one of her worship songs, revealing that it was born during a season when she was trusting God for a child and healing.

Speaking about the relationship between pain and spiritual experiences, the singer explained that some things people receive through difficult seasons may never come through a life of comfort. “Most of the times, I see that there are some things you might never get when you don’t go through it. Sometimes God brings things out of pain that comforts would never give you,” she said.

“I Was Trusting Him for a Child. I Was Trusting Him for Healing”

Agbebi recalled that when God gave her the song, she was going through a difficult period, crying and trusting Him for a child and healing. She explained that the song was not simply a collection of lyrics but an expression of her personal conversation with God during that season.

“When God gave me that song, I was trusting Him for a child. I was trusting Him for healing. I would always wail and cry and all of that. God remembered me,” she recounted. She also revealed that the particular experience happened on September 1 of that year. Unable to sleep, she found herself crying and pouring out her heart to God.

“Your Promises Are Sure. You Can Never Disappoint Me”

Recounting the moment the song came together, Agbebi said she was speaking to God about His promises and His faithfulness.

She recalled singing the words, “I was resting in it, Your promises are sure,” as she continued to express her heart to God. “I was saying, ‘Your promises are true. You can never disappoint me. You will never fail.’ So I was actually talking to my Father,” she said. According to her, she began singing spontaneously from that place of pain and eventually woke her husband, asking him to come and play the keyboard.

“I just started singing the song from that pain. Then I had to go wake him up. ‘Please come. Can you just be on the keyboard?’ And then he just stayed there. We were just worshiping God together,” she explained.

“I Didn’t Just Sing Words. I Sang From a Place”

Agbebi further explained that people have reached out to tell her how the song helped them through some of the darkest moments of their lives. She added that the song had also carried her through a dark season. Reflecting on its origin, she said the depth with which she sang it came from the experience she had personally endured.

“So that song was born out of pain. A person who has not gone through that probably would not even be able to sing that song with that weight. I sang it from a place. I didn’t just sing words. I didn’t just sing. I sang from a place,” she said. Her account highlights the deeply personal experiences that can shape worship music, and how a song born in a difficult season can later become a source of comfort and encouragement to others.
