Nigerian gospel singer Chidinma Ekile has opened up about the personal struggles that preceded her transition from secular music to gospel, revealing that she once left Nigeria intending never to return before finding renewed strength through her faith and the encouragement of music executive Eezee Tee. Speaking at an event organised by Eezee Conceptz, Chidinma explained that her decision to embrace gospel music was not initially driven by a desire to pursue the genre. Rather, she wanted to build a deeper relationship with God and dedicate more time to her spiritual life.
The singer recalled a difficult period when she felt stuck, unable to record music or focus on anything else. She eventually travelled abroad and began processing documents to remain there permanently. “I travelled. I ran away from Nigeria, as a matter of fact. I was processing my papers not to come back to Nigeria,” she recounted. However, her plans did not work out, and she credited Eezee Tee, the head of Eezee Conceptz, with consistently reaching out to her from Nigeria and encouraging her during that period.
Chidinma Says Her Gospel Journey Began With a Desire for God
Chidinma explained that her transition into gospel music started with a personal decision to pursue a closer relationship with God rather than a deliberate plan to change musical genres. She recalled that her initial conversations with Eezee Tee centred on her life, faith and relationship with God, with music entering the discussion later.
“So it wasn’t because I wanted to do gospel music, basically. It was just because I wanted something more serious with God,” she explained. The singer said her struggles had reached a point where she could neither record music nor think clearly about her next steps. She described the period as one in which her life appeared to have come to a standstill. According to her, Eezee Tee’s continued encouragement helped her find the strength to return to Nigeria.
Eezee Tee Encouraged Her to Return to Nigeria
While abroad, Chidinma said Eezee Tee was the only person calling her from Nigeria consistently. Their conversations continued as he encouraged her through the difficult period. She eventually returned to Nigeria and decided that she wanted to spend time with God. It was then that she approached Eezee Tee and asked him for a gospel music contract.
“I told him, ‘Just give me a contract.’ He gave me the contract,” she recalled. Chidinma said she reviewed the agreement and was ready to sign it, drawing on her previous experience with music contracts. However, Eezee Tee repeatedly encouraged her to consult her lawyer before making the final decision.
Chidinma’s Lawyer Was Surprised by the Contract
The singer recounted how her lawyer reacted after reviewing the agreement offered by Eezee Tee. According to Chidinma, the lawyer questioned whether the contract had come from a charitable organisation because of its favourable terms.
“My lawyer was like, ‘Wait, this contract, this whole thing, is this a charity organisation?’” she recalled. Chidinma said she had already signed the agreement by the time the conversation took place. Her lawyer accepted her decision, and the contract marked the beginning of her gospel music journey with Eezee Conceptz. The singer’s account offers insight into the circumstances surrounding her decision to work with the label and the support she received from its boss during a challenging period in her life.
Chidinma’s Transition From Secular to Gospel Music
Chidinma rose to prominence after winning the third season of Project Fame West Africa in 2010, building a successful career with popular secular songs such as “Kedike” and “Emi Ni Baller.” In 2021, she publicly announced her transition into gospel music and released “Jehovah Overdo,” marking a significant change in her musical direction.
Since then, she has continued releasing gospel music, including projects such as New Season, Psalm 16 and The Road Best Travelled. Her latest account highlights the personal and spiritual considerations behind that transition, as well as the role she says Eezee Tee played in encouraging her return to Nigeria and supporting her new direction. For Chidinma, the journey into gospel music began not simply with a change in genre, but with a desire to deepen her relationship with God.
