“They Didn’t Want To Listen to Me Because My Music Made Them Sleep”: Pastor Nathaniel Bassey Shares His Early Ministry Experience

Gospel music minister Pastor Nathaniel Bassey has celebrated Nigerian gospel rapper and singer Greatman Takit, describing him as the “Archbishop of the Gen Zs” during the Hallelujah Challenge Grand Finale. While acknowledging Greatman Takit’s influence among younger generations, Bassey reflected on his own early experiences in ministry, revealing that some people initially struggled to connect with his style of music.

According to him, some listeners did not pay attention to his music because they felt it made them sleepy. “When I began to do ministry early enough, some people didn’t listen to me because they said my music was making them sleep. Yes, it’s true,” Bassey recounted. He further revealed that a particular pastor had personally told him that his music made him sleep.

“I Didn’t Bother”

Bassey explained that despite the reactions he received, he did not allow the criticism to discourage him from continuing his ministry. He recalled that years later, he found himself speaking about the significance and impact of the same kind of music that some people had initially dismissed. His reflection offered a perspective on how musical expressions and styles can be received differently by different generations and audiences.

The gospel minister shared the experience while recognising Greatman Takit’s influence among young people, referring to him as the “Archbishop of the Gen Zs.” The description highlighted Greatman Takit’s place within a younger generation of gospel music ministers whose musical expressions connect with contemporary audiences.

Bassey’s remarks also reflected the importance of allowing different musical expressions to serve different audiences, rather than dismissing a minister’s style simply because it does not appeal to everyone. The moment took place during the Hallelujah Challenge Grand Finale, where Bassey publicly acknowledged and celebrated Greatman Takit.
