Never before have so many powerful messages been available at the tap of a screen. You can listen to a sermon on your way to work, download a teaching for a long journey, or watch a message with your family on a Sunday evening. But hearing a message is not the same as receiving it.
Be a doer, not just a hearer
James warns us: “Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves” (James 1:22). The goal of every sermon is transformation, not information.
Five habits of a fruitful listener
- Pray before you press play. Ask God to speak to you personally.
- Keep your Bible open. Check every scripture, like the Bereans did (Acts 17:11).
- Take notes. Write down one truth, one question and one action.
- Listen twice. A message heard a second time often reveals what you missed.
- Share it. Discuss the message with a friend or your family.
